Carmen and Jake’s winter engagement session in downtown Syracuse was one of those days that could have gone either way, but ended up feeling a little bit magical.
When Carmen first reached out, she knew exactly what she was signing up for with a February session in Central New York. The weather can be unpredictable at best, and the morning of their shoot definitely lived up to that reputation. We started the day with steady rain, the kind that makes you question every outdoor plan. Instead of calling it, we held out, and I am so glad we did. As the session began, the rain softened and slowly turned into light flurries, giving us the dreamiest winter atmosphere.
We spent most of our time walking around Franklin Square, taking advantage of the beautiful brick, iron details, and historic architecture that make that area so unique. There is something about the textures down there, the worn brick, the soft winter light, and the quiet streets, that creates such an intimate backdrop. Carmen and Jake were so easy to photograph, just naturally falling into step with each other, laughing, and embracing the cold like it was not even there.
To warm up, we made our way into Freedom of Espresso, right in the heart of the square. They grabbed a couple of coffees, and the whole vibe shifted into something even cozier. The windows, warm tones, and soft indoor light made it feel like a completely different kind of session layered into the same story. Some of my favorite images from the day came from inside the café, especially a shot taken from outside, looking in through the window. It has always been one of my favorite perspectives to play with, and the way it captured Carmen and Jake in their own little world felt so honest and cinematic.
Sessions like this are a reminder that imperfect weather can create the most perfect moments. Between the flurries, the city textures, and the warmth of a coffee shop break, Carmen and Jake’s engagement session felt effortless, cozy, and completely them.
