Where It All Started: Emily And Reid’s Engagement Session at Green Lakes State Park

Engagement sessions are honestly one of my favorite parts of the whole wedding experience. It’s such a fun, laid-back way to document this season of your life, and I always recommend doing one if you can.

It’s also a really important time for us to connect before the wedding day. You get a feel for how I shoot and how I guide you, and I get to learn what feels natural for you both. By the time your wedding comes around, it won’t feel like you’re stepping in front of a stranger’s camera, it’ll feel easy and familiar.

When it comes to planning your session, I always tell my couples to start with the vibe first. Think about what feels like you as a couple, then choose a location that matches that. Some of my favorite sessions are in places that actually mean something to you, whether that’s where you had your first date, somewhere you go all the time, or just a spot that fits your energy.

For Emily and Reid, we went back to where it all started for them at Green Lakes State Park. They chose golden hour, and the light coming through the tall trees was unreal. We started near the old visitor center, using the building and steps for a mix of candid and a little more structured moments, then made our way to the other side of the lake for those soft, woodsy, nature-filled shots. It felt really true to them, which always makes the photos that much better.

During the session, I want it to feel more like a date than a photoshoot. We’ll walk around, talk, laugh, and I’ll give you direction when you need it, but nothing is overly posed or stiff. The best photos always come from just being yourselves together
.
And for outfits, keep it simple and true to you. Wear something you feel confident and comfortable in. If you feel good, it shows in the photos. I’m always happy to help with outfit planning too if you want a second opinion.

At the end of the day, engagement sessions are about capturing you two as you are right now, and making it a really fun experience along the way.
